Why so many families are asking this now
It usually starts as a disagreement at the dinner table. The student wants to do something real: build, work, start. The parents want a degree, because a degree is what protects you when things go wrong. For a long time those two goals meant choosing one. They don't have to any more, and the rules that changed that are worth understanding properly, because getting them wrong is expensive.
The interest is real. Over the past year, Google searches in India for "online degree india" rose 70%, and "IIT Madras online degree" and "online BBA" are among the most common related searches. Source: Google Trends, India, Oct 2025–Oct 2026.
What do the UGC rules actually say?
In April 2022, UGC announced that students can pursue two full-time academic programmes simultaneously, at the same university or at different ones. Three combinations are allowed: two in-person programmes, provided their class timings don't overlap; one in-person programme and one online or distance (ODL) programme; or two online programmes. Attendance rules are left to each university. Source: Careers360, 12 Apr 2022, reporting UGC chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar; guidelines issued 13 Apr 2022. [1]
The middle option is the one that matters here. It means a student can spend their days in a demanding, in-person programme and study for a degree online, on their own schedule, at the same time.
Is an online degree a "real" degree?
Yes, if it comes from a recognised institution. In September 2022, UGC notified that undergraduate and postgraduate degrees earned through online or distance mode from recognised institutions are equivalent to degrees earned in conventional, on-campus mode. The word doing all the work in that sentence is recognised. Equivalence applies to an approved programme, in an approved mode, for the year you're admitted. A famous university's name on the brochure is not the same thing as an approved online programme.
How do you check if an online degree is UGC-approved?
It takes about five minutes, and every parent should do it before paying a rupee.
- Open UGC's Distance Education Bureau list at deb.ugc.ac.in.[3] It lists approved online and ODL programmes by university, programme, mode and year.
- Search for the university's name, and try variations. The same institution can appear under more than one name, for example "JAIN UNIVERSITY" and "JAIN (Deemed-to-be University)".
- Find the exact programme and mode. "BBA" in "Online" mode is a different entry from a BBA in "ODL" mode, or a different degree in the same mode.
- Check the academic year. Some universities are marked "Entitled", which means UGC lets them offer online programmes on the strength of their accreditation rather than approving each one separately. If the year shown is older than your intake, ask for the approval covering your admission year.
- Get it in writing. Any genuine programme can show you the paperwork. If it can't or won't, that is your answer.
Does doing two programmes at once actually work?
At scale, yes. IIT Madras's online BS is the clearest example: more than 38,000 students are enrolled, and 52% of them are also pursuing another undergraduate course. In June 2025 it conferred degrees on 867 graduates. Source: Careers360, 8 Jun 2025. [4]
But it isn't frictionless. In November 2024, UGC itself noted that some universities still hadn't implemented the policy despite repeated reminders, often because they insisted on migration certificates that block a second admission. Source: Careers360, 20 Nov 2024. [5]
And it is genuinely more work. Two sets of deadlines and two exam calendars can collide in the same week. It works best when the in-person programme is designed around the degree, not merely tolerant of it.
Three ways to combine a degree with real-world work
Red flags to watch for
- The programme isn't on the DEB list for your mode and year, and nobody can show you an approval.
- The brochure can't tell you which university awards the degree.
- Promises of a degree in less than the normal duration.
- Pressure to pay before you've had time to check.
- No clear answer on how exams and deadlines for the two programmes will fit together.
Where The School of Future fits
SOF's undergraduate programme is built on the second model. Students spend three full-time years in Kochi on modules, Co-Builds inside real companies and capstones, and enrol separately in an online BBA from Jain (Deemed-to-be University), so they graduate with both a portfolio of real work and a degree. Run the five-minute check above on it exactly as you would on any other programme, and ask us for the approval documents for your intake year.

The bottom line
You no longer have to choose between a degree and doing something real. UGC's rules let you have both. But "online" is not a shortcut around checking: the approval, for your programme and your year, is the whole point.

Frequently asked questions
Can I do two degrees at the same time in India?
Yes. Under UGC guidelines issued in April 2022, you can pursue two programmes at once: two in-person programmes with non-overlapping timings, one in-person and one online or distance programme, or two online programmes.
Is an online degree valid in India?
Yes, if the programme is from a recognised institution and approved for your mode and year. UGC treats such online and distance degrees as equivalent to conventional degrees. Individual employers and universities can still set their own criteria, so check any specific requirement.
How do I check if an online degree is UGC-approved?
Search the university on UGC's Distance Education Bureau list at deb.ugc.ac.in, find the exact programme and mode, check the academic year, and ask the university for written approval covering your admission year.
Can I do an online BBA while studying full-time somewhere else?
Yes, under UGC's 2022 guidelines, as long as the online BBA is approved for your admission year and you can manage both workloads and exam calendars.
